Little underwhelmed, but still a great pickup
First time using an active pickup. Installation should be very easy, but beware of "non standard" parts, like a smaller pickguard or tube/stave jack connector. Even then, I was able to install it without too much problems, and everything was working perfectly.
The sound is a little underwhelming, and I would recommend you look up a tone comparison to see if this is really what you are looking for, but you can't really go wrong for this price. In the end, while the tone is not what I expected from it, it is still a very good pickup.

awesome PU for heavy music
When I joined my metal band I was looking for a pickup that would give my guitar the aggressiveness I needed. But all the passive pickups I tried didn't do it for my. So I decided to try active pickups. Many metal guitarists play the EMG 81 so I simply ordered it. I took the white version for the bridge position of my white guitar.
A few days later the pickup arrived with all the necessary bits and pieces for installation: quickconnect cable, volume and tone pot, and battery plug. Installing it was really easy with the included manual. I restrung the guitar and there it was: the aggressive sound I was looking for. My guitar now has a good attack which is always good for staccato riffs. With the tone rolled back this pickup delivers even nice lead sounds. I still haven't tried the 81 in the neck position but i bet it sounds killer as well.
This pickup is not so well suited for crunch sounds with the volume knob rolled down. But who buys an EMG 81 for such applications?
This one's made for metal and rock and it roars!
it was money well spent!
P.S: the battery lasts for ages (2 years +) if you unplug the cable after each use.

EMG 81 WH
Brilliant. Solid, professional construction, easy to install with the solderless system. Sharp attacking sound, suited to the heavier styles of rock and metal. A lot sharper sound than a passive pickup.

Spectaculas
I loved the tone.
I just wished EMG would includ longer cable for output jack.

Huge Upgrade
I upgraded my Jackson king V red with the emg 85 white and emg 81 and it sounds like a different guitar, the sound is cutting through, the rhythm the palm muting and the melodies really on a different level. Highly recommended for an upgrade to a guitar if you want that insane heavy metal sound.
