More headroom/better definition but less distortion
Compared to the regular 81tw, the 81tw-x version has more definition and sounds more “organic”, both for metal and blues, and there is not a big volume drop when split to single coil (same for the 89X and 89XR) compared to a regular TW humbucker. The only minus is a slightly thinner (because of the extra “headroom”) sound and less push/distortion compared to a regular 81. And one of the big pluses is that EMG pickups don’t require soldering because of the solderless/quick-connect parts, that comes with all EMG pickups.
