Really great way to increase the diversity of your bass tones
eddiehimself 09.11.2018
This unit works very well to add in the diversity of an EQ to pretty much any bass. I know it says in the description that they're for EMG pickups, but in reality, there's no reason you can't use these with any pickups; it's just that the solderless connections are there to make it to use with EMGs. The boost/cut range of all the frequencies is really good, and the adjustable mids make this an even better proposition. The use of two stacked knob controls and compact size of this unit makes it easy to retrofit into almost any bass without too many modifications in terms of new holes or enlarging control cavities. My one gripe with this unit is the control knobs, which are just ugly and horrible plastic. I think EMG would be better off just not bothering to supply knobs at all. But this is a very minor blemish on what is otherwise an excellent product.
Amazing combo with EMG pickups, you can't go wrong with this one, also it's really cheap for the quality it delivers.
The only con is stacked pot knobs, those just suck. the knobs (plastic parts) not the pots. they are flimsy and my advice is just to get replacement knobs. Sire uses great alternative and there are multiple stacked knobs sets here on Thomann for the cheap.
It is an amazing preamp, easy to install, however it is even easier with EMG pickups. Quite impressive difference it makes on the sound and the stacked knobs makes it compatible with basses that had only 2 band preamps.
Well we all know EMG is the manufacturer of really great pickups and electronics for guitars and bass. This component allowed me to have a variable mid-range tone control in my last build using other EMG components. It's actually less costly to order several items from Tom and including shipping then to buy from retailers here in the United States. Go figure. I recommend Thomann to my friends looking for inexpensive but high quality instruments when they have a low budget. Especially beginners I recommend Thomann highly.
I bought these as replacement for an older (non-solderless) EMG BQC control that I broke. The design changed but the sound seems to be as good as previously. It is being used along EMG J pickups in a custom 5 string.
Update: I will put one star down in quality. While the preamp itself is of high quality, the included knobs are not up to par. The plastic/rubbery material of the knows make the lower and upper know operate with friction. Replace the original EMG tone knobs (plastic) with some metallic version.
The Warwick Potentiometer Dome Knob Black (Item No. 196577) is not a suitable candidate for this tone control, as it's diameter configurations are different.
The dedicated controls allow you to sculpt every small detail. Much warmer than other bass eqs. The parametric mid is speally useful when finding the right frequency to scope my active jazz bass pickups. All the signal is completely active.
The pot caps included are plastic and pretty much the same as the original ones except for the small logo on top. Nothing special, these pot caps must be replaced with a more alluring alternative.
