Höfner H500/1-HGL Green Line

I've owned a bunch of German Hofners, both vintage and reissue. This one is simply the best sounding of them. As always with Hofner, you can't know beforehand if its well-made. There is not much consistency in their work (the angles of the necks can differ widely etc.). But if you have the love for Hofner violoins, this is one for the connoiseurs. Beware though, that it will change colour, becoming much darker over time.

I've had my eye on this Hofner Green Line for some time now after rocking an Epiphone replica of the classic Beatles Bass for 10-15 years, and finally picked up this H500/1-HGL.

The Green Line (the real deal!) is unsurprisingly better in every way - it plays effortlessly with crystal clear sound on all frets across all strings, and just plain feels nice. I've only practiced with it for a few weeks now, and I'm absolutely itching to get out and gig with it. The custom case that's included is perfect - with the abnormal body shape and higher bridge of this design, I could never find a case that fit my old bass (which was the same shape). I also love that it included a portfolio including photos of the folks at Hofner that carved and assembled the guitar! A great touch.

If I had to find anything to ding, it would be that the volume/tone knobs have no markings, so I had to add my own notches for setting levels. Seriously, that's the only thing I have to complain about, and I'm not even remotely complaining about that. :)

Thomann also exported the shipment from Germany to me in the US, and had awesome communication walking through the process of handling overseas shipping, customs, etc. Between the bass itself by Hofner and the service by Thomann, the whole thing almost felt like white glove service. I'm very happy with it all!

C 'est une Violin Bass un peu particulière, mais c'est avant tout une Violin Bass, avec toutes ses qualités et ses quelques défauts.

Déjà, elle est belle à tomber. Elle fait presque un peu jouet quand on la prend : toute petite, toute légère. Mais dès qu'on touche les cordes, elle se réveille et livre un son fabuleux. Non, elle n'est pas faite que pour être admirée.

Dès réception, il faut la régler un peu : réaligner le chevalet flottant (il a tendance à bouger dans le transport, et les cordes se décalent vers la corde sol), régler l'intonation, le poncer légèrement pour qu'il épouse au mieux la forme de la table à l'endroit exact où il est positionné (et donc ne le faire qu'après avoir choisi ses cordes définitives, pour ma part les Pyramid Gold qui sont livrées avec sont parfaites). Si la corde Mi ne sonne pas (et ça arrive souvent), c'est que le chevalet est à régler (et le réglage ne peut se faire qu'avec du papier de verre, autant dire que c'est une plaie à régler). Le réglage de l'intonation est un tantinet long à faire, et ne pourra être qu'approximatif, mais bon, une fois fait, on n'y touche plus.

Une fois ceci effectué, le son est à tomber, riche, profond, dynamique, une expressivité qu'on ne retrouve pas sur les autres basses. Alors oui, ça manque un peu de sustain, mais ce "thump" caractéristique est inimitable. Après, on ne prend pas une Violin pour son sustain, mais justement pour cette attaque marquée, et ce decay rapide.

Les finitions sont excellentes, les bois sont parfaitement choisi, pas une frette qui dépasse. Tout au plus pourra-t-on déplorer la touche (et le pickguard) un poil sèche à la réception et qui a nécessité un huilage léger, et un capuchon de potard qui a tendance à glisser, qui a nécessité d'écarter les pattes du potard.

En terme d'ergonomie, c'est une Violin Bass : pas forcément très confortable, ni assis, ni avec la sangle, mais simple à jouer. Les cordes sont plus proches, ça nécessite d'adapter son jeu. Mais une fois pris l'habitude, cette basse est très attachante. Le manche est un poil épais, mais j'aime bien. Les repères de touche sur la tranche du manche sont en noyer, et sont assez peu visibles. Et en terme de défauts c'est à peu près tout.

En bref : belle à tomber, un son à tomber, une ergonomie auquel on n'est pas habitué, un réglage un peu compliqué, mais une belle basse très attachante.
