Ovation Pro Series Classic 1773AX-4-G

My impression after 72 hours with this guitar.
Things I like:
1. The sound plugged in is great, unplugged it is a bit weak, but improves when you upgrade the strings (from factory Adamas to D'Addario EJ46C) and with time when you play it (even in 72 hours!).
2. The neck is very playable, if you prefer a flat fret-board, and easy to adjust if it starts to warp.
3. Neck came adjusted nicely to straight and lowest recommended string-height.
Things I don't like:
1. The craftmanship is not perfect (compared to my American Ovation Legend 1867). I.e. the binding is not fitted precisely to the bowl, and there is a small nick in the soundhole's edge that has been fixed with filler and before lacquering. The Ovation sticker in the bowl was halfway fallen off when it arrived.
2. For some odd reason Ovation decided only to put one dot at fret 7, nothing else. Very annoying when you play fast passages and don't have time to count the frets, or do math!
3. The equaliser. The buttons are really plastic-like and do not move smoothly, and the equalizer is far to effective (too large range).
4. The D-string (Adamas) broke after 48 hours. On the other hand this let me upgrade the strings:-)
5. The neck warped slightly when changing to D'Addario EJ46C (hard tension) but was easy to correct.
6. There was no manual for the guitar or the electronics in the box. There was a manual for a Celebrity (the cheapest Ovation series...).

I already had an Ovation steel-string guitar and 4 string bass both of which are 5 stars in my book. I like the Ovation OP-Pro electronics and pickup on all 3 instruments. This 1773-AX-4 is fabulous. As a steel string player most of the time, the neck on this guitar is not as wide as a standard classical guitar, so, it's easy to switch between instruments. And it sounds excellent plugged in, and acoustically, too. I took it to an unplugged jam night recently - there were 4 nylon string guitars there, and all the players wanted to play my Ovation. I wasn't particularly impressed with the strings it came with (I never am) - I like Savarez nylon strings, which lifted the sound from excellent to sublime. It's a joy to play and I love the sound.

The acoustic sound and the resonance of this guitar is not as loud and as long as a solid wood typical guitar but this is not the point of this piece. The on board electronics are incredibly good. I have several high end electric classical guitars and the piezos on those sound too plasticy, unnatural and nasal. This guitar sounds record ready, almost as natural as a microphone take, that is the strength of it. The acoustic sound is still very descent just not loud. It comes with a very expensive set of strings but I changed them because they are not the right choice for this guitar. The strings are warm and mellow where this guitar requires bright and projecting strings.
The finish is exceptional, the tuners are great, and the look is killer overall. Highly recommended.
