Just the right tool - Vandoren Reed Resurfacer with Stick
Anonym 27.08.2015
Had this been a bit cheaper I would have given it 5 stars. It is just right for tweaking reeds, but it does seem a bit expensive for a piece of glass that looks like it's been washed up on the shore. Having tried - mostly unsuccessfully - to adjust reeds, either with bits of sandpaper or scraping them with a razorblade, I can now say that having the right tool makes a big difference. The classic sax player's dilemma is whether to buy a box of reeds expecting some will play too soft or whether to buy the next strength up, expecting most of them will be too hard to be playable. Armed with this tool one can easily tweak the ones that are a bit too hard. Even just a little sanding on the back so the reed fits snugly on the table seems to improve the playability of a reed without affecting it's playing life.
This is nicely designed and executed. It does the job without risking to damage your reed, unless you are really careless. However I would expect from Vandoren a little bit of extra information on how to effectively use it in order to improve the sound of your reed.
I find Strength 2 1/2 reeds are often too soft and strength 3 too hard. Using the resurfacer and stick to prepare a selecting of reeds ready for performance is easier more satisfactory and less messy than fine sand paper. I should have bought them years ago.
