J
The most useful module in any subtractive synth
JoeD 07.03.2026
A filter sweep on the classic Moog ladder filter is the most fundamental and audibly recognisable part of analog subtractive synthesis at all. There are many other great filters, but this is the original. The Behringer version is of course NOT the original, but a faithful reproduction of it. And the price is so small that you can sprinkle them out over the rack whereever they are needed. I have four so far and would not rule out getting more.
The only downside is that the range selections are rubbish. But that is, as far as I understand, also a faithful reprocuction of the original. And the sound is great, nontheless.

Awesome clone

I currently own two of these and need one or two more. The best sounding filter got even better by packaging it in a small eurorack form factor. Plenty of drive and even a little more. I love how this filter can reproduce subtle tones with the contour turned down low, or become as moogy as you like with its higher resonance settings.
Tuning the filter feedback is a bit touchy due to the small eurorack form factor with smaller knobs but it can done when needed.
Finally, I knocked off one features star, only one, because I realize that behringer is being faithful to the original 904a, but in order to connect this module to your envelope generator, you really need an attenuator to control the amount of contour... therefore you'll need an attenuator in line.

Classic filter

Does what you expect, sounds very nice. If you want to get closer to the original check out the modification proposed by Rob Keeble of AMSynth, Got one of his and that is even better. Hopefully a few more of his Schulze project Moog modules get adopted by Behringer as well.

Solid great sounding ladder filter. Very easy to overdrive. Negatives: the range switch has no real purpose, the control inputs have no attenuator, no voltage controlled resonance, no signal input attenuator. But hey its cheap and sounds really good, the sound changes radically if you change the signal input level, and always very musical. +/- 5V input is classic thick driven moog sound, lower is really clean, higher means serous squashing.
