The first Elektron box to do both drums and a poly synths at the same time without being a sampler. For my dawless live set with modular I needed:
- A good poly synth with preset functionality
- A good drum machine capable of a wide variety of sounds
- A mixer for the above + 2 external channels with sends
- A few effects on the above sends, at least good reverb and syncable delay
- A master compressor with sidechaining options
- A sequencer to record live into from a MIDI controller
- A MIDI sequencer to control my two modular setups
- A min. 2 channel audio interface to record through
This thing does all of the above and more, and saves me an insane amount of cabling, space and hassle compared to getting those things individually.
And it can sound absolutely massive and/or beautiful.
My only gripe with this machine is that it's a little too menu-divey for my taste, but this is the price for the insane amount of possibilities it offers. Performance-wise it's very difficult to control several things at once. I did try to solve this by adding a external MIDI controller, but since the Digitone II does not send MIDI feedback and can't receive relative MIDI CC it results in a lot of value jumps (the MIDI controller has no way of knowing what values the Digitone II parameters are set to). This is the reason for the lacking stars.
