Having played solid rosewood-bodied guitars for decades, I recently decided to buy a Yamaha FS5 (Sitka top and
Mahogany back and sides). I fell in love with that guitar emmidiately, but the phosphor bronze strings on it sounded a bit off, as if the shimmery highs of those strings fought the frequency response of the mahogany. Tried Thomastik Spectrums and Optima Golds (both favorites of mine) - a lot better, but not perfect. So I gave the Monels a go (a lot of people recommend them especially for mahogany-bodied guitars) and after a short break-in period, that balanced, organic and woody mahogany sound I was after, was there without sacrificing clear and present highs. Those monel strings are made for mahogany!
I highly recommend others in the same situation to try them out. Give them a few hours of playing to settle, and you will be in for a pleasant surprise!
