Steinberger Guitars Spirit XT-2DB Standard Bass BK

I like this bass very much because it is headless and it is made by the Steinberger bass concept. I like the tone of this bass a lot, and I have played Steinberger Spirit basses for years.

I can recommend this bass because it has a low weight and thereby spares your back. Furthermore it is portable and still a full scale instrument that produces great and serious tone from funk, rock to blues and even jazz. But the detuning function on the bridge is a great feature if you like the detuning of your E-string. This bass model covers the middle ground between a 5-string bass or a deep 4-string bass.

Being a 4-string bass it is built just like the XT-2 and it has the same tone and feel. The difference is the detuning option on the bridge and the humbucker construction that is similar to the XT-25 5-string version. I like this humbucker configuration and it is stable and easy for adjustment.

The electronics are great and the hardware is top quality. A good piece of advice is that you should not oil the adjustment screw on the detuner (the round screw on top of the bridge), because the screw will not stay in the desired position after your adjustment of detuning to Eb, D or B and that is irritation when being busy on stage.

However the regular tuner screws and the sliders should be oiled/greased to reduce the wear and tear over time tuning over 100 times. You will also notice that the tuning will be easier on your fingers. After this operation you will have a great tuning system that keeps the tuning in tune over time.

My only critical point is the strapping knob on the back of the neck joint. I really would have loved a more balanced solution where the Synapse solution would have done wonders to the Spirit model(s) for making the bass hang naturally. The original swirl system of the legendary L2 cannot be expected on the Spirit model.

These Gibson-owned Steinberger's are made in China these days from Wood, not resin but certainly look the part painted up in these strong colours. Out of the box the set up is not bad but I made some adjustment to the bridge saddles and truss rod to get a slightly lower action. The Humbucker pickups have enough power and the Bass overall has a Trebly Piano-like tone. I also fitted an active circuit from Thomann with no routing needed for some extra tonal variation and punch but its personal taste. I ordered the 'drop D ' bridge version but this design doesn't work too well for me due to the D tune retainer screw rotates while playing, therefore does not hold its tuning and if you lock the clamp screw you can't adjust it mid-gig. Go for the regular bridges version and you have a good travel Bass. The Bass is about 1m in length so a short scale version from Gibson would be a perfect travel Bass but this is better than other travel designs on the market in my opinion.
After a couple of years by Bass has developed a vibration from within the truss-rod neck cavity which is very annoying even if it isn't audible when plugged. Quality issues.

Compré este bajo porque necesitaba un instrumento de tamaño y peso reducido y no me ha defraudado, si eso es lo que buscas: Este es tu bajo.
La funda con la que viene equipado es muy practica y me permite llevar el instrumento colgado a la espalda como si fuera una pequeña mochila. Ahora puedo ir a los ensayos en moto y no tengo problemas de aparcamiento. El tamaño también es importante. Punto a favor a tener en cuenta.
El ajuste de fabrica del instrumento estaba muy mal hecho. Trasteaba a partir del traste 10 en adelante (las cuerdas chocaban con los trastes haciendo un ruido insoportable) tanto que era casi imposible tocarlo. Estuve a punto de devolverlo pero decidí llevarlo a un luthier para que lo ajustara. Consiguió ajustarlo y dejarlo en estado óptimo, pero me comentó que le costó mucho trabajo porque el instrumento "se resistía" ir al sitio correcto. Punto en contra para el bajo.Tuve que pagar un dinero extra para ajustarlo.Debería venir mejor ajustado de fabrica.
Las selletas del puente donde se apoyan las cuerdas son unas piezas cuadradas que no están sujetas al puente. En cuanto se aflojan las cuerdas se mueven o se caen, lo que es un incordio porque tienes que empezar de cero a ajustar otra vez el bajo. Cuidado cuando cambies las cuerdas, las selletas están sueltas y se pueden caer.
Los puntos de apoyo de las selletas. Estas son cuadradas pero solo tienen dos puntos de apoyo colocados en diagonal, de tal manera que la selleta, además de estar suelta, es inestable a la hora de regular la altura de las cuerdas. Punto en contra. El diseño de las selletas las deja sueltas y es muy difícil regular el bajo porque solo tienen dos puntos de apoyo. Las selletas deberían llevar cuatro puntos de apoyo o estar sujetas al puente.
Las cuerdas con las que viene equipado son de de mala calidad y a poco que empieces a tocar te manchan los dedos. Con el tiempo ha dejado de hacerlo, pero las cuerdas han quedado descoloridas y lucen muy desgastadas, cuando son prácticamente nuevas, por lo que recomiendo cambiarlas cuanto antes. Punto negativo, sería bueno unas cuerdas de mejor calidad.
El mástil me sorprendió por lo estrecho, largo y cómodo que es. El diapasón es muy accesible en toda su extensión, además tiene 24 trastes en total, por lo que tienes a tu disposición un gran rango de notas y octavas, sobre todo si te gusta trabajar en la parte inferior del mástil. Punto a favor del bajo. Gran rango cromático.
Los botones de afinación de las cuerdas no me gustan mucho, son duras de accionar y algo imprecisas. Al principio cuesta un poco afinar el bajo, pero cumplen su función y al estar integrados en el instrumento, lo hacen muy compacto por que no sobresalen del cuerpo. Punto a favor para el diseño.
La palanca para cambiar la tonalidad de la 4ª cuerda bajándola una octava de Mi a RE, prácticamente no la uso, no le veo utilidad. Punto neutral para el bajo.
Me sorprendió el sonido del bajo. tiene una gran pegada y "sustainer" a la vez de ser muy versátil. Puedes tocar cualquier estilo musical con él, suena espectacular. La electrónica del bajo es muy buena, es lo que más me gusta de este bajo junto con su pequeño tamaño. Un doble punto a favor para el instrumento.
En resumen, un bajo de buena calidad por un precio contenido, su pequeño tamaño y facilidad de transporte, no le impiden tener un gran sonido. tiene un par de defectos de diseño y la fabricación podría mejorarse, nada que no pueda arreglarse. En líneas generales estoy contento con la compra.
