I'd seen some videos online pitching the benefits of these heads as a game changer for those players who want an acoustic kit without the volume. I myself have family and neighbours to consider when jamming all hours of the day and these heads have transformed practice for me by providing all the feel and rebound of a standard head with a fraction of the volume. They sound good too, letting my poplar/birch shells resonate and sing in the same way they would with standard heads. I have been massively impressed.
I started to use this today. I played with it for over 2 hours. I was really excited for this head. However, i did't find it as good as it was advertised. Unfortunately, "sound stays same but volume is lower" thing is not true. Basicly this is a mesh head with some "string sound" added via a thin line set of head. I would like to see some other comments on this but for me, not only it is a dissapointment but also a failure for Evans.
While probably the best offering out there for quiet practice, I feel it gives far more snare-wire snap than most people would want, with almost no resonance. This will certainly appeal to a lot of people, but I hope future innovations will allow for a better balanced tone, maintaining the same low volumes this offers.
I've bought two of these and while it's hard to get a true snare tone it comes a lot closer than just regular mesh heads and sounds good regardless. The head makes the sound of a snare with plastic strips under the mesh which I've found breaks after 5 or 6 months though I hit very hard which is likely part of the issue.
