Versatile guitar at a great price
Jobert Rohnson 13.03.2018
I was looking for a versatile acoustic guitar that would be good for stage, recording and playing outdoors. As mainly an electric player, I found the transition into acoustics a bit challenging and didn?t want to choose the always popular dreadnought. Yamaha CPX 600 is a very good choice if you?re looking for an affordable guitar and want a slightly bigger sound than the more popular APX model offers.

Visually the guitar is nice to look at and is not neck heavy even though the neck seems to be made of a fairly heavy wood. There are some minor cosmetic imperfections that I honestly wasn?t expecting from a Yamaha but then it isn?t one of their more expensive models. Things like slightly over-painted headstock, a tiny imperfection on the lacquer of the neck (satin finish) and a small cloudy area on the top lacquer do not affect the playing at all. To be honest after a day or so, I didn?t really notice them anymore.

No sharp fret ends and a very comfortable neck to play. The tuner works well and the preamp is also good and easy to use. The strings it comes with turn your fingers black and a couple of the pins seem to have been badly inserted and stick up a bit but nothing that can?t be fixed by changing the strings. A slight adjustment to the truss rod and some fret polishing might make this instrument easier to play, especially if you like to do bends etc.

In all, a great value guitar that looks pretty with the curvy body it has. In the photo on this site the vintage tint looks more mustardy than it actually is. It looks much better in real life, more orange but not a garish tint, a very nice matured shade of orange. Some are hesitant about Yamahas but throw your possible prejudices away since this is a really nice sounding guitar.
